Introduction

The Parenting Education Orientation program was conducted at Nepal Mediciti Hospital, targeting nursing and non-medical staff. This initiative aims to equip hospital staff with essential parenting education knowledge to support better and educate parents as well as caregivers

The parenting education orientation covered various sessions such as the importance of parenting education, different parenting styles, the role of fathers, effective communication, parenting in the digital age, nutrition, and physical health, stages of child development, managing screen time, building emotional intelligence, positive discipline strategies, strengthening family bonds, and the available packages for parenting education.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Parenting Education Orientation were:

  • Enhance Knowledge: To improve the understanding of parenting education among hospital staff.
  • Skill Development: To develop the skills necessary to educate and support parents effectively.
  • Promote Collaboration: To foster collaboration between medical and non-medical staff in delivering comprehensive parenting education.

The orientation program saw the participation of 35 individuals, including 7 male and 28 female attendees. The participants were a mix of nursing and non-medical staff from various departments:

  • Nursing Staff: Registered nurses from different wards such as Emergency, Preoperative, Post-operative care, General ward, Pediatric ICU, Gastrointestinal department, and Radiology department.
  • Non-Medical Staff: Administrative personnel and support staff of the hospital.
  • Medical Staff: One General Physician from the Internal Medicine department also took part in the orientation program.

Feedback

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with high levels of satisfaction reported. Attendees appreciated the comprehensive coverage of parenting education topics and the interactive nature of the sessions.

Outcomes

The program yielded several significant outcomes:

  • Increased Knowledge: Participants demonstrated a marked increase in their understanding of child development, various parenting styles, the role of fathers, and the importance of effective communication.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Staff members reported feeling more confident in their ability to communicate with children and support parents.

Recommendations

To build on the success of the orientation, the following recommendations were made:

  • Parent Engagement: Develop strategies to engage parents directly in parental educational sessions led by trained staff.
  • Develop Facilitators: Conduct training of trainers (TOF) for hospital staff to create a pool of parenting education facilitators.

Conclusion

The Parenting Education Orientation at Nepal Mediciti Hospital was a resounding success, empowering both nursing and non-medical staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to support parents and caregivers effectively. This initiative underscores the hospital’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for families and ensuring the holistic development of children.
